My son is at that age where everything is "on the brink." It's exciting to watch your little one soak up life around him like a sponge. It's also eye opening. Every bit of media, every book, every conversation and even every toy is having a real impact on his little world. With this in mind, I was happy to come across a fun line of toys, Alphabeasts, designed to lay the foundation for learning while still encouraging creativity and fun.
Alphabeasts is a series of stuffed characters each given a unique persona. These two sided toys showcase one alphabet letter per character (capital letter on one side and lowercase on the other). Played with alone or in combination, these soft and hugable creatures provide a nice learning platform to share the alphabet with your child.
As soon as the Alphabeasts arrived at our house I started sharing their letters with my son. He now knows each one and has fun retrieving them when I yell out their letter. While flash cards might also work for teaching the alphabet, they don't cuddle as well as these stuffed creatures do.
I am happy we have added these new friends to the well-loved stuffed animals in our home, because I know these are the ones that will help my little guy learn skills that will last a lifetime.

Being a homeschool mom formerly a teacher of high school math, I know that numbers and math "stuff" gets confusing or boring. That some kids just don't "get it" and aren't motivated to try to "get" what they need.
I was very surprised and impressed with You Can Count on Monsters. It' s a math book like NO other:) Written by Richard Schwartz, a mathematician and professor at Brown University, You Can Count on Monsters is a fun way to learn, relearn or just practice the concepts of prime numbers and factoring from 1-100!
Each prime number is given it's own personality based on dots, like Monster #2 (his dots are his eyes). So when you work with composite numbers that can be factored, the new monster is the mixture of the prime numbers that it is made out of...
For example, 14!! Each number includes the factor tree and the monster that is created. So from the factor tree you see that 14 is the composite of 7 and 2. Do you see Monster #2 in Monster #14?? yes, in his MOUTH:)
My kids are still a little too young to totally understand the concepts, but my oldest is learning her multiplication facts and has enjoyed "testing herself". My son though.... he was immediately drawn to the monsters!! And both kids loved trying to figure out which prime number monsters made the mixture monsters.
It's a very colorful and fun way to learn and explore math:)
When I was at Toy Fair this year, I walked by the booth that had Digi-Piggy in it, turned around and walked right back! It certainly caught my attention! I mean, look at this, isn't it awesome:
"The website Mashable listed Digi-Piggy as one of the top 10 coolest new toys at Toy Fair, which is HUGE. Mashable is the top source for news in social and digital media, technology and web culture."
Lili loves the new piggy bank! She is always wanting to put her money in the bank instead of taking it with us to the grocery store to get something out of those horribly addicting (for kids) machines in the entry ways. Now she runs over to her bank and pops the coin in. "Mommy, how much is this worth?" This piggy bank has made her very curious about money and how all different shapes and sizes of money equal different amounts of money. And I just love it because she is learning AND saving!! BONUS!!
Now Adalynn on the other hand, loves it too. She snorts at it every time we put money in. She doesn't quite grasp the concept yet. But...she is only 1.5 ;)
There are quite a few GREAT things about the Digi-Piggy, but instead of me trying to rewrite what their copy already does such a good job saying, check it out below. I'll put in bold what I love about it too:
The Digi-Piggy™ is a piggy bank like no other; this piggy is able to count your savings for you. The Digi-Piggy™ comes with an innovative electronic LCD digital readout on its snout that allows you to track your savings while being both easy and fun at the same time. The Digi-Piggy’s™ lower portion is clear to allow for an easy view of your growing savings. For every coin dropped into the bank the LCD displays its value by blinking three times followed by the total amount saved. When you are ready to empty the bank simply push the reset button, and the Digi-Piggy™ is ready to begin saving again. The Digi-Piggy™ has been designed with safety in mind: The AA-batteries are housed in the top portion of the bank with its own battery housing, and a small safety screw keeps the batteries out of children’s reach allowing for adult peace-of-mind.
The Digi-Piggy™ is a great way for people of all ages to save money. You can forget about having to break the bank ever again, The Digi-Piggy™ has a twist–off head that allows for easy withdrawals of your savings. In addition the LCD snout will take care of counting your coins for you, making saving a fun and exciting experience.
Last thing I want to note quickly: Inside the Digi-Piggy® there is an IC memory chip which allows an “auto save memory”. If the batteries go dead and need to be changed, the amount is saved and restored once batteries are replaced. The total savings amount will be saved and stored!
You can find Digi-Piggy on Facebook too. Head on over and like it to hear about news and special promotions going on! Also, Toyburg (company website) can be found on Facebook too! They are the company that has exclusive rights to distribute Digi-Piggy on Amazon and eBay!

Baby...Toddler...Preschooler? Just teach them all!
When I was at Toy Fair in New York this year, I ran into Christy the owner of Teach My and fell in love with her product! Genius I personally think. My husband and I are very involved with our children's education. From the time our girls are just babies, we are working with them on anything where they can learn. We always make learning fun, and these kits just add to our arsenal of learning goodies!
Not only are these learning tools, but they are FUN! My girls just love it. We were sent the Teach My Toddler set and both my girls are very interested in the whole kit. There were even a couple shapes that my Lili didn't know so she thought it was super fun to work with Adalynn, teaching her along with learning herself. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?! :) Makes a momma proud!
One other great thing about these kits is the fact that all the learning materials fit in ONE kit - whether it be the baby, toddler or preschooler one! Boom! How great is that? So for those of you who have a lot of things in your home, or for those that have a small home (like yours truly), this is just great! It fits right on the shelf, or under my desk...and everything fits in the box. I know I have said that once before, but I wanted to repeat it in case you missed it the first time :)
One more thing I want to mention, this is a great item for the Grandparent's house or maybe for a babysitter's house. It won't take up a lot of space and you know your kids will have the opportunity to be learning versus watching TV.
Teach My, award winning educational toys for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. No need to spend hundreds of dollars going to several stores buying individual teaching tools, Teach My kits provide everything necessary for preschool learning, all in a portable and storable case. The perfect baby shower gift!

Tengo orgullo que puedo hablar espaƱol como segunda lengua. (Translation: I am proud to be able to speak Spanish as as second language.) But, learning Spanish did not come easy to me and I always wished I had been able to start language classes before high school.
Simply because of the difficulties I had learning a second language, I had long ago decided to start teaching my kids a foreign language at a much earlier age. Until I found Little Pim, I never realized how early that could be.
I was going to write my own description of what Little Pim is and how it works... until I read their blurb about those very things and my description suddenly became horribly long-winded and inadequate.
Little Pim is an award-winning foreign language immersion DVD series for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. We currently offer three theme-based DVDs that use our unique Entertainment Immersion Method™, which combines animation and real kids, teaching simple words and phrases for everyday activities. Each program is available individually or in a discounted three-disc set. Currently we offer Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Hebrew, English (ESL), German, Arabic, and Russian.
Every day now, I get asked, "Mom, can we watch Little Pim?" "Sure." I love that Little Pim (the cartoon panda) has made learning Spanish fun for the my 3 year old and easy for me!
It also has worked out great that the DVD is sectioned into seven five-minute episodes. These short episodes make it easy for even my 11 month old baby to sit, watch, and learn before her attention span is spent. :)
GET YOUR OWN!!! Visit the Little Pim website to order your own Little Pim DVDs, flash cards, gift sets, digital downloads and even iPhone apps!!! If you you are unsure which language would be the best fit for your child, Little Pim has a short quiz that can help you choose. (Short as in only four questions.)
*In order to conduct this review I was provided with the Little Pim DVD pictured above. The opinions provided are my own.

All in all we like it and are ready for Halloween.
This kit includes: • The Taking the Scary Out of Halloween Book • 10 Safety Guidelines for Halloween • “Make and do” activities for costumes and makeup • Simple Halloween night recipes • Glow-in-the-dark stickers • Glow whistle • Glow necklace and bracelet • Flashlight with interchangeable Halloween-themed lenses
As a parent of a preschooler I had started purchasing various workbooks a couple months ago to help aid in teaching my daughter basic writing skills. After getting each of these workbooks home I would look through them more thoroughly and end up disappointed each time. They were either too advanced, too boring, or progressed from a very basic beginner skill to a seemingly advanced skill too quickly. Then we found Kumon Workbooks.
Kumon Workbooks have been both fun and challenging. Progressively building on skills, the Kumon Workbooks give my daughter a chance to master a skill before introducing her to a new concept. Throughout the workbook there are also tips for me as a parent to help in the learning process and prepare me to assist her as new concepts and skills are introduced.
We started with My First Book of TRACING, and as we've progressed through the workbook my daughter has become much more confident with holding a pencil correctly and tracing lines on her own. Shortly after starting My First Book of TRACING we also began working on My First Book of COLORING and it was very easy for me to see how the Kumon Workbooks build on skills learned from previous workbooks.
GET YOUR OWN! If you're unsure which workbook to start your child with just head on over to Kumon's website and read the descriptions for their workbooks. With a wide variety of workbooks ranging from their First Steps Workbooks (for kids as young as 2) to their Grade School Workbooks (for grades 1-6) you can find a Kumon Workbook to help almost any aged child.
WIN YOUR OWN! Kumon has decided to give one lucky SIMPLE reader two (yes TWO) Kumon Workbooks of their choice!!! Just head on over to the Kumon website and come back to tell us what two Kumon Workbooks you'd like for your little learner!!!
As always, visit our giveaway rules page for complete instructions and guidelines on our giveaways.
Winner will be randomly selected and announced October 23, 2010. Good luck!
THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED - CONGRATS TO OUR WINNER #53 CORINNE!!!

My son doesn't watch to many shows on TV, but Sid the Science Kid is one that he will watch over and over. He loves it.
He got the oppurtunity to review 3 episodes from the 2nd season that starts on October 4th. Let me tell you he watched those over and over again.
It is great because Sid is always trying to learn about everything. Each episode he always wants to learn why things do what they do.
It is very educational and fun. Introducing preschoolers to the basics of science through the eyes of a young science reporter named Sid, is a fun way to educate. Each episode begins with a new question and Sid embarks on a fun day of adventures filled with singing and dancing. My son truly loves it. He sings right along with Sid...it's boggles me on how quick he learns from this show.
We also recieved a Learning Kit called Why are Wheels Round?. With this Why Are Wheels Round? Learning Science Kit, you can observe how the shape of wheels affects car movement and what happens if they race a car on different surfaces or at different angles!
Also included to review was this cute microphone. Fun push-button features let you create applause noise after you've interviewed someone, laughter noise when you've told a joke and even the Sid the Science Kid series theme song and silly sounds when you're ready to sing! Set it to echo mode and listen to your voice echo...echo...echo... everywhere you go! My son just loves it.
GET YOUR OWN!! You will be able to start watching the new season that premieres on October 4th on PBS. You can find these learning kits and microphone on shoppbs.org.
WIN YOUR OWN!! Simple readers have a chance to win on of these Learning Science Kits. To enter, please comment as to whether your child will be watching the new season of Sid the Science Kid.
For my daughter's 5th birthday, she received a butterfly kit from Insect Lore. Once we got the painted lady caterpillars, my kids were glued to the fully enclosed (LOL!!) habitat watching the caterpillars' every move. They were a little confused when they turned into chrysalises and then just amazed as the butterflies emerged:)
For this review, Insect Lore let us bring home some more cool creatures:) This last kit we've tried was the Praying Mantis Pagoda!! With the adorable and totally enclosed habitat, we received a live egg case!! Each kit also comes with instructions... which was so nice since I had NO clue how many were going to emerged or what they looked like, or what to feed them!! I was soo glad Insect Lore also sent us the Life Cycle Stages figures (I highly recommended these especially with younger children or with an unfamiliar insect!!!)
Here's my house when they emerged...
We learned soo much by the experience!!! I didn't even know the cycle of mantises, what their egg case looked like or even what types of food they eat! What we were the most surprised about was how friendly they were when we released the hundreds that emerged!!!
Experience Science… that’s the goal of Insect Lore! They offer tons of kits, games and other interactive activities that help teach and let kids experience SCIENCE !! By being hands-on and letting kids see the plants and animals (and insects) grow and change, kids get to see things that are normally done in nature “out of sight”.
They have tons of cool kits and games that I would love to bring into my home!! Ones I have my eyes on are the carnivorous plants kit and My First Chemistry Kit (sounds perfect for our 1st chemistry lessons next year)!
GET YOUR OWN!! You can find all sorts of ways to experience science and all kinds of insects to watch grow at Insect Lore. Their prices are great!! Many kits (habitat and creatures)like the butterflies, mantises, and ladybugs are $20! And those great little life cycle figures are $5.99!! Great gifts!!
WIN YOUR OWN!! The amazing folks at Insect Lore are giving SIMPLE readers a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.... seriously guys that's like 2 kits and some cool figures!!!
To enter, visit Insect Lore and tell us what you'd like to get if you won!!
2 entries !!! - Purchase something from Insect Lore and leave a comment that you did! Leave it in two separate comments:)
This giveaway ends Oct 9th. Make sure you leave a way to contact us in your comments:)
