essie jain :: until the light of morning cd

The first time I listened to Essie Jain's Until The Light of Morning album I made the mistake of doing so at night while I was trying to get some work done on my computer.  The only reason this was not a good idea was because I wanted to stay awake, and by the time her 35 minute album was done I was ready for bed. (She has obviously passed the test for a lullaby album's effectiveness.)

While Until The Light of Morning didn't turn out to be the best music choice for that instance, I have to clarify that I really do like this entire album.  Essie Jain has a lovely ethereal voice that easily lulls both children and adults to sleep.  I also think that Until The Light of Morning is the perfect time length to help get kids calmed down for bed or off to sleep.  The tracks also become progressively more relaxing, unwinding until the end with the entirely instrumental "Midnight Starship."

In the words of Essie:
I've been playing music and singing songs for as long as I can remember.  Over the last few years, I've been blessed with the opportunity to perform all over the world.  The thing that struck me the most during my travels, was how often people told me that they felt soothed, calmed and comforted when I sang to them. At the same time, my family and friends back home had started to have kids.  It became apparent to me that they were always looking for new music to soothe their babies at nap and bedtime, and as a result of hearing the same CD for the hundredth time, they were quietly going crazy listening to songs that were working for their little ones, but certainly didn't do it for them. It was then that I realised what my next project would be...

I often find myself wishing my life was set to music -- some wonderful score to put emphasis on the happenings of my day. As I listened to the beautiful collection of music on the Lullabies for Sweet Dreams CD from Across the Meadow I realized I CAN set life to music.

I appreciated the moment of great joy as I wateched my son sit to read a book and cuddle in with a stuffed animal friend while the wonderfully arranged lullabies and classical favorites filled the room. We all know there are countless children's music CDs available on the market. But this CD seems to hit a mark that so many others miss. Tastefully simple music showcases the soothing sounds of violin and piano to set a calming tone. Lullabies for Sweet Dreams does a great job creating music that inspires the mind and satisfies the soul. And it is music that can be enjoyed by all ages -- you won't ever walk away after listening to it thinking, "I have that awful song stuck in my head." (I have been there with other children's CDs).

My son is almost 21-months-old and I know he will enjoy this music in the future as much as he does today. And, thankfully, so will I.

recess monkey :: flying! {giveaway}

I’m not sure how many times my mother took her costumed children (most often a Ninja Turtle and Kitty Ballerina) to the grocery store, bank, or doctor’s office - I only know that, somewhere, there are pictures to prove it. To say we had vivid imaginations would be an understatement, so I was pretty excited when offered the chance to preview Recess Monkey’s latest studio album, Flying!, which releases this Tuesday, June 21st.

Flying! is an homage to the power of make-believe. Without patronizing, the band (three school teachers from Seattle) creates music to which children are easily able to relate. The toe-tapping title track, “Flying”, perfectly captures the mindset of a pint-sized super hero, able to soar above the trees and save the day thanks to the magical transformation provided by a cape. “Toolbox” brilliantly describes a child’s fascination with moving parts and and desire to “fix” things just like Dad. My personal favorite “Invisible Friend” is a sweet conversation between a little boy and his invisible friend, who is no less real just because others can’t see her.

Elements in each track reminded me of my 4-year-old nephew - everything from his child-size table and chairs at “Grandmom’s House” to his pet fish and eager anticipation of “Flapjacks” for breakfast. The adorable 50s doo-wop styled “Bunk Beds” could have been written by a 6-year-old version of myself - proudly sleeping on the top bunk with my younger brother below.

Flying! adeptly mixes slower songs with more uptempo numbers, and, unlike many children’s recordings, the musical styles of the songs are quite diverse. These guys aren’t just making goofy kids’ music - they’re genuine musicians! I was able to listen while driving without reaching for the “off” knob, which, in my opinion, is really important. It takes talent to create an album of children’s music that both adults and kids can identify with, and I believe Recess Monkey’s latest collection of “kindie rock” has done just that!

lucky diaz and the family jam band :: oh lucky day! CD

Remember Lucky Diaz & The Family Jam Band?  I first introduced you to them a couple months back and told you how expectantly I was awaiting another album from them... (initial review here)

Well,  they have released another great album and I think it was well worth the wait! My girls and I started listening to Lucky Diaz & the Family Jam Band's newest release, Oh Lucky Day! a couple weeks ago and Michaela had most of the songs memorized within a couple days.

We love all their new songs, but her hands down favorite is "Pretty Princess."  Besides for randomly signing the lyrics to herself while playing around the house, she just has to join in any time she actually hears it playing.  Here's a little video of her singing along.  Usually her face is lit up with a GIANT smile while singing "Pretty Princess" but she was being self-conscious because she knew I was taping. :)

The songs on this album are quirky, upbeat and catchy.  Many of the songs are girl-centered which is good to know if you have a little boy, but if you have a little girl in your life I think she would be happily singing along to Oh Lucky Day! very quickly!

I have been potty training for the last 3 days. So, we have watched a lot of "pre-recorded" television and played a lot of games and read a LOT of books. I was SO thrilled when the new Dinosaur Train DVD arrived in our mailbox today! We had variety once again!! This DVD is adorable. My girls just love it!

And oh my goodness. The laughs I got out of Adalynn put me into hysterics. She hadn't ever seen Dinosaur Train before. I thought it might scare her just because they are, well, dinosaurs. I couldn't have been more wrong!

joanie leeds and the nightlights :: what a zoo! {giveaway}

It's no secret that my girls and I LOVE finding great kids music. We were given the opportunity to check out Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights', What A Zoo! and we've been having fun singing along with Joanie Leeds as she belts out all these fun animal themed songs for a couple weeks now.

If you have a kids who is as fascinated by all things animal as mine is they'll love that every track from What A Zoo! is animal themed. Each time we listen to "Froggie Went A Courtin'" (featuring Secret Agent 23 Skidoo) I am reminded of being a kid myself.

While hands down, Michaela's favorite song is "Wimoweh" because she's totally obsessed with watching Disney's "The Lion King" right now and Leeds' "Wimoweh" version has child participation to "jump and ROAR" whenever she counts to 3 during the song!

I also have to draw attention to the pure brilliance of "Happy As a Clam". While all the animal inspired 'isms' are lost on my 3 year old, I have a deep appreciation for anyone who can string together that many unrelated animal-themed phrases to make one coherent and catchy song.

Bravo! to Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights for making What A Zoo! not only entertaining and catchy, but a little educational too!

Rockabye Baby!

A few months back I introduced you all to Rockabye Baby! (initial review here.)  If you're not familiar, "Rockabye Baby transforms timeless rock songs into beautiful instrumental lullabies. Guitars and drums are traded for soothing mellotrons, vibraphones and bells, and the volume is turned down from an eleven to a two. Rockabye Baby is the perfect way to share the music you love with the littlest rocker in your life."

Now, don't think that Rockabye Baby! is just for the under 1 crowd. Both my girls enjoy dancing to our Rockabye Baby! CDs and I love that I can listen to versions of my favorite rock songs without having to worry about not so appropriate lyrics. Plus, they're just FUN!!!

Here's what Rockabye Baby! CDs we have been rotating through lately: 

Lullaby Renditions of Bon Jovi:  In my mind Bon Jovi is classic, like blue jeans and white tee shirts.  I frequently find myself adding in the lyrics for hits such as "Livin' On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive".

Lullaby Renditions of Pearl Jam: Having completed High School in the 90's there is no possible way that I could not know Pearl Jam.  The lullaby versions of such songs as "Alive" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" remind me how much I will never miss flannel, but I could totally miss the extra pounds I've picked up since those days...

Lullaby Renditions of Black Sabbath: Every time I listen the "Iron Man" I giggle.  Yeah, giggle.  It's the musical equivalent of watching a cartoon where the Fairy Godmother magically turns a three-headed fire breathing monster into a helpless fluffy kitten.  {giggle*giggle}  See? There I go again (the fact that in my imagination I'm headbanging along doesn't help me stop).

Lullaby Renditions of Kanye West: While the lullaby version of "Stronger" will never make it onto my running mix, I can't help myself from dancing every time it or "Heartless" starts to play.

Music For Aardvarks & Other Mammals - All I Want!

The first time I listened to David Weinstone's, Music for Aardvarks & Other Mammals Album, All I Want! I got caught up on track #5.  With lyrics such as "I like cell phones, they taste good" and "I can't climb but I love stairs" I think any parent of an active child will appreciate "Better Keep Your Eye on Me!" (Or better knows as "Dani's Song" here at our house).

With an eclectic mix of instruments including upright bass, banjo and even mandolin, Music for Aardvarks & Other Mammals is an equally eclectic mix of music genres.  From the foot-stomp inspiring "Bathtub Soup" to the head-banging beat of title song "All I Want" each song is distinctive and fun.

If you are looking for some new music to entertain your Kindergarten and under crowd and have an varied taste in music I highly recommend David Weinstone's Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals, All I Want!

Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band

We have a new kids CD here at our house.  It's only 5 songs long, but I'll gladly listen to it on repeat for over an hour.

Even when the kids aren't around.

WHAT?!?  Yeah, I was totally stunned when I caught myself doing that for the first time.  I mean, I forgot I was listening to a children's CD, how often does that happen?

With kid friendly lyrics and fun upbeat music you should definitely check out Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band.  Once you hear them you'll totally understand.

Here's my sum up of how great this CD is: This Old Man.  Even though the lyrics are the same ones you learned in kindergarten the fantastically updated beat made it feel like a new song. This is the best remake version of a traditional kids song that I have ever heard and I'm glad to introduce my girls to this version first.  (Maybe we could start a petition for Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band to work their magic with "Wheels on the Bus" too?)

My favorite song though is Explorer.  Every time it comes on I find myself tapping my toes and singing along.  In fact, I've added it to my grown up playlists making Explorer the first, and only, children's song to enter into my 'mommy time.'

Light up your hearts with Luminate!

They had me from the opening track!

Tyler, Texas-based pop/rock band Luminate releases its first full-length national debut, Come Home, TODAY. Already receiving widespread acclaim, the band may best be described as passionate, stirring and worshipful as Luminate’s songs express hope and encourage listeners to seek the redemptive purpose of God in their lives.

As I was writing the review, my husband says in the background... "I love this song!" You may have heard this song already too on your radio. This music is just fantastic! I seriously think every track is great. I don't skip any and rock right on through the whole album! :) Here is a little on the making of "Come Home" (the song is playing in the background):

“We were writing the song ‘Come Home’ about a relationship I was in,” says Luminate frontman Sam Hancock, “but the further we went with the song, the more I realized the song was not about her, but about me! I was the one that needed to ‘come home.’ I realized I was avoiding my destiny and the call on my life. I lost the original vision and was pursuing fame. A little bit of recognition and I started building my own empire under the guise that God was using me, when in actuality my light was growing dim. It was then I realized that I had to exchange my broken empire for my part in the Kingdom of God, the kingdom that will never fail.”

The album continues with a set of worshipful, emotion-filled songs that draw from personal journeys of overcoming fear (“Hope Is Rising”), fighting apathy (“Innocent”) and finding hope, peace and purpose in Christ (“New Beginnings”).

Yeah, We Like Waffles!

I don't think it is any secret that we really like music around here.  I am constantly looking for fun new CDs for my girls and Parry Gripp's, Do You Like Waffles? is definitely that.

At just over 17 minutes long, Do You Like Waffles? is made up of 24 very short, very catchy,  food-themed tracks.  "The Ballad of Melvin The Magical Hotdog" is the epic story of Melvin The Magical Hotdog and is the longest track on the CD at barely over 1 minute.

I have caught myself singing the title track "Do You Like Waffles?" every time I make waffles lately (and that's pretty often since we just got a new waffle maker).  My three year old made me play "Midnight Snack" over and over until she had it memorized. 

Every time the first song on this CD starts, my three year old starts dancing around and asks "Mom!  Wanna have a dance party?!?"  Of course! :) 

I think this CD is a keeper and if you want a fun, silly CD to enjoy with your kids at home or in the car I highly recommend Parry Gripp's, Do You Like Waffles?

DidiPop Goes To Hawaii

It is cold and snowy here in Michigan and I can think of nothing better than a trip to Maui.  All this cold makes me want warm sand, umbrella drinks, fresh pineapple and Hawaiian music.  Ahhh... relaxation. :)

Unfortunately Fortunately, I will not be taking my two small children on a 20 hour plane ride to Hawaii anytime soon and there will be no warm sand or umbrella drinks in our near future.  Thankfully, we can enjoy the sounds of Hawaiian music with DidiPop Goes to Hawaii and have our own virtual vacation in the car or at home.

The songs on the album were inspired by Deborah Poppink's (aka DidiPop) actual visits to Hawaii with her family.  The songs are kid friendly, and very catchy.  Every time "Wowie Gazowie" plays, I can't help but sing along and Michaela is learning how to say humuhumunukunukuapua'a from listening to "The Hawaiian Alphabet Song."

Mind of My Own with Frances England

I will freely admit that I enjoy listening to children's music with my kids.  There is nothing quite like hearing their little voices singing along with a favorite song, or watching them dance with complete abandon because of some silliness they are hearing in the lyrics.

Sometimes though I want something that isn't quite so much the screeching of "Wheels On The Bus" and more like the music I enjoy when there are no kids around.  That's why I like Frances England's Mind of My Own.  She has managed to combine a relaxing folksy sound with kid-approved lyrics.

Every time her song "Jacques Cousteau" comes on I find myself singing along and my daughter loves the title song "Mind of My Own".  After listening to her Family Tree and Fascinating Creatures albums online we have officially become Frances England fans.

Keller Wiliams' First Children's CD!

The best way I can describe the Keller Williams CD Kids would be... Funny, quirky and childish.  And quite frankly, what better combination for a children's CD? Keller Williams sounds like he managed to grow up, but not quite all the way, allowing his songs to connect with kids on their level.

For instance, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a seven year old boy who didn't appreciate a little potty humor (and let's all be honest here, there are lots of 37 year old boys who still appreciate that too). The giggle inducing "Mama Tooted" is perfect for them.

Now, a show of hands please from all the grown up mamas who were once little girls who worked hard to master all the hand-jive, hopscotch, and jump rope chants of their childhood. Your little girls will probably appreciate listening to "Horse Back Rider" over and over until they too have mastered the increasing tempo of this track and are able to keep up.

Oh, and everyone can use the good advice provided in the aptly named "Good Advice."  Because you should "never pick your toes and then pick your nose, cause then your nose smells like your toes."
